Originally from Dublin, Claire Halpin is Professor of Plant Biology and Biotechnology and Deputy Head of the Division of Plant Sciences at the James Hutton Institute. She took a non-traditional path to where she is now, including initially having an interest in the biomedical world, completing a teaching qualification and studying for her PhD part-time whilst working as a research assistant. Claire worked in industry for Zeneca Seeds, Bracknell, before returning to academia to establish her own research group.

Claire moved to Dundee over seventeen years ago where she lives with her husband and two teenage daughters.
